This year, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects received an overwhelming number of nominations from its members, and the long-awaited HKIA Annual Ball cum Annual Awards Presentation 2023 was finally held on November 8. The event was widely attended, and we had an incredibly enjoyable time mingling with our clients and fellow members. We are delighted to share:

The Transport Department Vehicle Examination Complex (TDVEC) is Hong Kong’s first multi-storey vehicle examination center, featuring 30 inspection lanes and other vehicle inspection and testing facilities. It is a reprovision project that consolidates the operations of the existing Kowloon Bay VEC, New Kowloon Bay VEC, and To Kwa Wan VEC into one centralized building. The new VEC at Tsing Yi has a design capacity to handle 1,000 vehicles per day. To overcome the challenges of the irregularly shaped and congested site, the team has implemented an innovative driveway arrangement—a double helical ramp—to manage vertical vehicle traffic and eliminate potential vehicular conflicts. The façade design draws inspiration from the concept of smoothly functioning machines, giving this highly functional building a distinctive identity.
The recently completed HKSTP Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) was commissioned by the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) in 2017. This world-class project, developed in collaboration with the consultant team and HKSTP, represents a significant milestone in Hong Kong’s re-industrialization and commercialization of innovations. The AMC is a 1.1 million square-feet multi-storey industrial building that embraces Industry 4.0 standards. It has been tailored to accommodate highly automated production and operation processes for tenants across diverse industries. The facility enables scalable manufacturing and prototyping of technologically innovative, high-value-added, high-mix, and highly customized products. Additionally, it provides shared services such as logistics, warehousing, prototyping, low-volume assembly, and clean-room-enabled spaces. The design concept draws inspiration from the beam structure, symbolizing an innovative gateway. It represents the opening of opportunities for the future and signifies the transition to a new era, marking the revitalization of the industrial sector in Hong Kong.
